Last week, I had the opportunity to join Rufus Teaque Social Mixer Event for a night of BBQ.  Organized by Branding & Buzzing at Barque Butcher Bar on Roncesvalles, Toronto, Executive Chef and Owner of Barque, David Neinstein showcased us with Rufus Teaque’s sauce and rub as a official kick-off of BBQ season.

I have read through some articles on internet about the founder of Rufus Teague, John McCone.  He actually didn’t think to get into the barbecue sauce business. It was just happened after he received a smoker for Father’s Day in 1998.

Over the next few years, he got good at barbecuing and teamed up with his buddy to enter several barbecue and sauce competitions.  

During 2002-2008, they won some grand championships and a slew of awards.

The first bottle of Rufus Teague came off the line on Memorial Day 2005 after McCone’s friend opened the Sunset Grill in Overland Park and asked if he could use McCone’s sauce at the restaurant.

Till 2012, McCone’s company has manufactured three sauces (Honey Sweet, Touch’O Heat and Blazing Hot), four rubs, two steak and dipping sauces.  

As of now, the three original sauces remain in line plus two delicious Whiskey Maple and Smokey Apple. All of the products are gluten-free.
